NAMHO is the National Association of Mining History Organisations with members based in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Cleveland Mining Heritage Society formed in 2011 and over the last 10 years have built strong relationship with local landowners, allowing the conservation and exploration of many local mine sites often located on private property.
Latest newsConference booking is well underway with over 120 people registered. Early bird booking has now closed but there are still underground trips available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and plenty of surface trips. And, there are of course talks all weekend. See you there!
Mining in North Yorkshire and Cleveland
The conference is based in North Yorkshire and Cleveland, an area that boasts a range of different minerals:
The area has a rich mining history, from early Neolithic salt extraction, jet mining driven by Victorian fashion, 100+ years of intensive ironstone production, potash mining since the 1970s and coming right to the present day with the Woodsmith polyhalite mine currently being sunk near Whitby.
NAMHO 2022 will feature rather more surface trips and drift mines than usual, the nature of our geology and local mining techniques tends to leave complex mazes with the potential for bad air, so smaller guided groups are also essential.
You may notice there are no SRT options on offer this year, simply because there are none in the local area (well at least none that don’t end in deep water and low oxygen !)
While government restrictions are in place, please note that all delegates must abide by whatever Covid rules are in place at the time of the conference.
In the event of the cancellation of the conference by last minute government rule changes, refunds will be made.
